Catalyst - As we have seen in all areas of culture and the arts, most innovation is born out of the limelight, away from the crowds, arising from the urge and the need to change the status quo. Such changes were often part of the struggle by a new generation in their attempts to create and establish their own identities, something unique and different from what had come before. The initial spark might be simple, but the journey itself is always full of purpose.  This is what LAMA hopes to achieve with this show. We hope that your participation in Catalyst will ignite that spark within and that it encourages you to continue the journey with clear purpose and intention.

Dear fellow artists,

Los Angeles Movement Arts (LAMA) is producing its second iteration of Catalyst. It was conceived as a platform for artists to push their boundaries and promote purposeful experimentation.

We would like to invite you to submit a proposal for an original piece that follows the spirit of Catalyst and the guidelines given. The LAMA Catalyst production team will then select several pieces to be presented at the Catalyst show, December 11th, 2010 at the Diavolo Space.

LAMA's Catalyst production team has decided on a conceptual framework for our second Catalyst.

The idea:  "Necessity is the mother of invention," For this year's Catalyst, “we would like to ask the choreographers to create a guide for their piece using art form other than dance. It doesn't matter which art form, but it has to be performed live.” This is to encourage a cross medium/discipline approach.

Responsibilities:

  • LAMA is not a festival or a dance company. We are simply a group of artists who are passionate about what we do.
  • In that spirit, we expect all choreographers to help out with the show in a non-monetary supporting capacity. This includes promoting the show and helping to sell tickets.
  • LAMA expects, in good faith, that all pieces will be well-rehearsed and ready for the show.

Suggestions:

  • Take risks with your piece.
  • Don’t be reactive. Don’t take the easy way out by doing the opposite of what you have been doing. Find what you are most afraid to do as an artist and a performer.
  • We encourage you to collaborate and interact with other artists. LAMA is here to provide a platform for like-minded artists to get to know one another.
  • Take Risks. (Yeah! We like to repeat ourselves.)
